Nestled between rolling volcanic hills and deep craters, Lake Natron sits at the lowest point of the rift valley 600m above sea level and is probably the world's most caustic body of water. This spectacular area sits just north east of the Ngorongoro Crater and forms part of Africa's immense Great Rift Valley.

It is an active volcano and can be climbed, although it is very demanding. Lake Natron is a salt lake located in northern Tanzania, close to the Kenyan border, and just north east of the Ngorongoro Crater, in the eastern branch of Africas immense Great Rift Valley. South of Lake Natron lies Mount Ol Doinyo Lengai (2878 metres high). We didn’t mind getting a little wet, and so loved this walk and the swim at the bottom of falls. There’s a bit of gentle scrambling involved, and you’ll also cross the river a few of times. This walk winds up through a shady gorge (very welcome in the heat) between steep cliffs. Whilst here, take the chance to walk up to the Engero Sero Waterfalls. This walk is best done in the very early morning or late afternoon out of the heat of the day. You can walk out across the baked mud to the shores of the great soda lake itself, in which algae and zooplankton thrive – which in turn attract the flamingos that line the lake’s shore. Instead visit this area for its remoteness, its scenery and some interesting. “You’d literally get, say, a hundred finches washed ashore in a 50-yard stretch.Activities in the Lake Natron area focus mainly on walks. Lake Natron does have some wildlife, but this is not the main reason to come here. I saw entire flocks of dead birds all washed ashore together, lemming-like,” he says. During dry season, Brandt discovered, when the water recedes, the birds’ desiccated, chemically-preserved carcasses wash up along the coastline. Lesser flamingoes are pictured on Septemat the Lake Natron at the foot of Ol Doinyo Lengai. Brandt theorizes that the highly-reflective, chemical dense waters act like a glass door, fooling birds into thinking they’re flying through empty space (not long ago, a helicopter pilot tragically fell victim to the same illusion, and his crashed aircraft was rapidly corroded by the lake’s waters).
